Hemp vs Bamboo Fabric: The Greenwashing Guide

Bamboo viscose has become the poster child of "eco-friendly" fashion. High street brands splash it across their packaging. Influencers praise its silkiness. But the reality is far messier. If you care about what you're actually wearing, this comparison matters.

The Core Problem: Bamboo viscose is marketed as sustainable because bamboo grows fast. But the production process is where the deception lives — and it's where hemp pulls decisively ahead.

The Manufacturing Reality: Viscose vs Hemp Processing

Bamboo fabric does not exist in nature. To turn bamboo into the silky fabric brands sell, it must be chemically dissolved in a viscose process. This involves sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) and carbon disulphide — highly toxic chemicals that strip the bamboo down to cellulose pulp, which is then re-solidified into fibre.

The environmental cost is severe. Viscose mills produce effluent that is frequently dumped into rivers with minimal treatment, poisoning waterways in countries where labour standards are lax. Workers in these mills face chronic health problems from chemical exposure. A single kilogramme of bamboo viscose fabric can generate up to 20 litres of toxic waste.

Hemp processing, by contrast, uses mechanical retting or enzymatic breakdown — no harsh chemicals required. The fibre separates naturally, leaving behind only biodegradable plant matter. There is no toxic waste stream, no poisoned waterways, no worker illness from caustic chemicals.

Water Consumption: Both Are Thirsty, But Differently

Bamboo requires less water to grow than cotton — a genuine advantage. However, the viscose conversion process requires enormous quantities of water for rinsing and processing. Total water footprint: bamboo viscose uses roughly 2,700 litres per kilogramme of finished fabric.

Hemp requires minimal water to grow and minimal processing water. Total water footprint: approximately 1,200 to 1,500 litres per kilogramme. The advantage is clear, but neither is "dry" — both are water-intensive textiles. The difference is that hemp's water use ends at growth and processing, whereas bamboo's chemical-heavy process means that water becomes contaminated.

Durability and Longevity

Bamboo viscose feels luxurious — silky, soft from day one. But this softness comes at a cost. The viscose process weakens the fibre structurally. Bamboo garments often pill, stretch out, and degrade after 30 to 50 washes. The "luxury" lifespan is short.

Hemp is stiffer initially, but this is structural integrity. A hemp garment will outlast bamboo by a factor of three to five. Cost per wear over a decade? Hemp wins decisively, despite higher upfront price.

Certifications: What Actually Matters

Some bamboo viscose is produced using "closed-loop" systems (FSC Certified, Lyocell/Tencel process) where chemicals are recycled rather than dumped. These are genuinely better. But they remain a minority of bamboo production, and even closed-loop systems use harsh chemicals that conventional hemp processing avoids entirely.

When buying bamboo, look for Tencel or closed-loop certification. But understand you are buying "less bad," not "good." Hemp, by contrast, is inherently low-impact at every stage.

The Greenwashing Angle

Brands love bamboo for one reason: it is cheap to produce and easy to market as "eco." The narrative is simple: "bamboo grows fast, therefore bamboo is green." Consumers repeat it without digging deeper. Marketing departments exploit this relentlessly.

Hemp has the opposite problem. It is genuinely sustainable, but it carries cultural baggage (cannabis association) that makes it harder to sell at scale. Brands would rather sell greenwashed bamboo to the masses than explain hemp's genuine benefits to a smaller audience.

If you see "bamboo viscose" on a label without Tencel or closed-loop certification, you are buying greenwashed fast fashion with a sustainability veneer. The environmental cost is higher than conventional cotton when you factor in chemical pollution and worker health.

Hemp is the answer. It is genuinely low-impact, genuinely durable, and genuinely better for everyone in the supply chain. The only downside is cost — but cost-per-wear over a decade makes it the smartest choice, not just the most ethical one.
